Alt Text Health Check

Results from tracking 31,754 images across 1,655 instances from the mastodon.social federated timeline.

Then filtering down to the top 1000 instances by active user from instances.social who had posted at least 38 images (2x the average).

@AltTextHealthCheck It makes me really sad that there are only 24 instances where even a mere 50% of images have #AltText.

So, in other words, on *all of the other 1,631 instances*, it's safer to bet that any given image will be alt-less.

On the over 1,600 instances not listed here, there's less than a 1 in 6 chance that an image has an alt text.

Basically, what this is saying is that alt texts on Mastodon are far too rare.

#Accessibility is kindness, and we aren't showing it. 😢

@kagan @AltTextHealthCheck I started to write alt texts months ago. Is there a way to encourage people to write some ?

@lyokolux @AltTextHealthCheck Go you!

I really don't know how to encourage it. I feel like modeling it, and occasionally posting about best practices (advice on how to do good ones, etc.) is more likely to have good effects than anything that could be seen as scolding, but I have no data on whether even the "posting nice stuff" has any effect at all.

@kagan @AltTextHealthCheck I would see a warning in the mastodon app when a image is posted:
"Some users won't be able to understand your image. An alternative text representation can provide a description to visually impaired users."

Something like that. It can of course be improved.

@kagan @AltTextHealthCheck That's not the metric by which they picked the top 50 though? This is top 50 by active users. Taking this distribution to hold for the rest of the instances is not valid in the first place (large instances have different demographics and cultures than small ones), but even if you did, you'd get an average of around 50% alt-texts across all instances. Again, this isn't a valid extrapolation though.

@AltTextHealthCheck even the friggin tech bros on fosstodon have more alt text than us, please do better and use alt text fellow Kolektiva users.

@AltTextHealthCheck especially us anarchists should write alt text for the pictures we post whenever possible, everything else would be incompatible with anarchist ideas. What kind of anarchist reinforces hierarchies such as ableism? What kind of anarchist doesn’t choose to help others (I’m not sure if help is even the right word, it’s just the most basic of decency, it’s just not excluding people from being able to access your posts) when they can? I’m disappointed, but not surprised honestly. The state of the anarchist movement is kind of sad and ableism especially is way too widespread. Please do better everyone.
