"TIL an Icelandic tradition called Jólabókaflóð exists, where books are exchanged as Christmas Eve presents and the rest of the night is spent reading them and eating chocolate"

WHAT

@Altruest I would love to implement that, but in my family only my mother and I read for fun. So might not fly.

@BetaPositiveSA @Altruest you & your mum could always just fo a christmas eve bookswap with eachother

@Nezchan a very good deal lol I might have to switch up my Christmas traditions

@Altruest The only real tradition I have currently is Chinese food on Xmas eve.

@Nezchan I don't even have that lol fun stuff like that is cool though, my family takes up enough of Christmas day that it's not even fun anymore, so something for me on the 24th sounds nice

@Efi that's so cool! Sounds like the best Christmas eve ever.

@Altruest yes! then again, anything sounds like the best eve when it's not my family

@Altruest The Nordics have a lock on cool winter traditions

@Altruest That sounds like a fine idea. Although I'm going to have to insist on calling it something that rolls off the tongue a little easier. 😆

@Altruest @DialMforMara I could loan you a poker and Christmas Eve and we could eat chocolate

@Canageek @Altruest
Voice input. I assume you mean "lend me a book around Christmas Eve"?

@Altruest Yup. I don't remember what it's called but there's something like "book season" for the month before christmas where something like 90% of all books sold in iceland per year are sold in one month.

Publishing there has to be wild.

@Altruest This seems pretty legitimately the best way to do holidays ever.

@Altruest @shoutcacophony the Reading Glasses podcast talked about this a while back, even interviewed an Icelandic author maximumfun.org/reading-glasses

I had my bags half packed to move to iceland by the time the episode was over 😛

@Altruest Can I return my normal Christmas and exchange it for this one

@Altruest TIL, I am spiritually Icelandic, as it applies to Jólabókaflóð, a made up word that completely gets me.
