I know its fun to make fun of Americans who think Denmark, Sweden, etc. are socialist but also...take a minute to see where these people, usually Bernie folx new to the socialist fold and still trying to navigate the jargon and conceptual infrastructure, are coming from:
A country where you can still very easily go bankrupt from medical bills--where you can have a serious injury that knocks you unconscious and suddenly wake up in a hospital bed you can't afford to spend one night in...(+)
...the same country where I broke and dislocated my ankle at 18 and then, despite my foot being completely backwards, refused to get into the ambulance because my mother had trained me since I was little to *never* accept an ambulance ride because it's too expensive.
Of course those states look like utopia to someone who grew up in this shithole--they know nothing else besides the neoliberal hell where some capitalist is constantly waiting to take everything you (barely) have.
We're a backwards-ass country, slowly being overtaken by the decline of our social structure, increasingly incompatible with the basic necessities of life.
Our education is shit: school teaches us nothing but to be a good employee--everything is focused on STEM and technical learning, we have no historical context if we don't try to educate ourselves (which the current system doesn't exactly encourage people to do).
Yes, America is an empire, but that doesn't mean the working class here...(+)
...live like kings. The vast majority of the people live an extremely precarious existence--there is no safety net to stop them from slipping through the cracks.
It's easy to make fun of these people, and even the people who are die-hard Bernie fans, but just recognize: these people are still fighting for the most basic benefits of social democracy that most Europeans have had for over half a century.
@Catsandcatsandcats "because my mother had trained me since I was little to *never* accept an ambulance ride because it's too expensive" man this is so fucked up :/
Its a little bit of a funny story though. Might go into it some other time.
@Catsandcatsandcats whats equally bad is folk (especially petit bourgeoisie)
here voting away these benefits over last 40 years as they want the "freedom" of Americans that they assume USA people have via what they see on TV, movies and Internet (bigger cars, shops and consumer goods, some even want the same freedom to shoot at others they don't like the look of..
I've noticed this as well--I really wish I could ship these people over here and let them see how much it sucks.
@Catsandcatsandcats to be fair Mastodon is doing a good job of educating Europeans about the truth of life in USA (the absence of advertising from USA brands as a distraction and counterargument being a big factor) and Trump is changing attitudes - my generation thought "OK Americans /do/ have cool stuff, but Reagan could get us all blown to ashes" and Trump is about 10 times worse..
My experience living in the US
@Catsandcatsandcats I lived in the US for a few years and barely made it out. I can see why universal health care and higher education and such things sound great to a USian, but it also doesn't nearly capture the differences. To me the US just seemed utterly ruthless, and merely existing there as an independent autistic person required more energy than I had. There's those big obvious things, but also a hundred small ones that cumulatively are just overwhelming.
My experience living in the US
@Catsandcatsandcats Scandinavian countries are nowhere near perfect, but the difference to living in the US is greater than people who act informed seem to think.
Fark bro that's a shit state of affairs.
@Catsandcatsandcats It doesn't help that many USians think that socialism == communism and sometimes = fascism even. To be fair, they may only choose between two right of center parties that behave nearly identically in office.
Yeah, I think this is related to the purposeful obfuscation of cold war propaganda
@Catsandcatsandcats Yes! I really pity the average US citizen post WWII.
They just spent YEARS being flooded with happy propaganda about good 'ol soviet 'Uncle Joe' when the propaganda turned 180 about the evil red menace and the iron curtain at the end of the war! Wow...
