Unlike Twitter, Reddit is a decent source of traffic for 9to5Mac and other sites. Destroying the Reddit experience and knee-capping third-party apps will have a domino effect in online publishing, especially indies.

But that's not all. People rely on Reddit for all sorts of things: news, support groups, and so much more. Reddit is a fundamental resource for so many things.

The way Reddit and its CEO are acting through all of this is shameful. Do better, Steve Huffman.

The VergeReddit CEO tells employees that subreddit blackout ‘will pass’By Mia Sato

@ChanceHMiller Why do you think that is, the news traffic difference between Twitter and Reddit?

@lapcatsoftware I think there are a few factors. One, Twitter by nature attempts to suppress links that take you off the platform – especially the algorithmic feed.

On the other hand, Reddit is link-heavy and is designed such that a single click takes you directly to the publisher's website.

Also: Reddit communities are unmatched. The r/iPhone and r/Apple subreddits each have around 4+ million subscribers. Even a modest amount of upvotes will give your your site a lot of eyeballs.

@ChanceHMiller The algorithm downweights link tweets? That’s interesting!

@lapcatsoftware very, very much so. we've run a bunch of tests using the same tweet with and without a link. the version without a link always does like 10x better in engagement.

@ChanceHMiller Thanks for the insight! I had no idea about that.

@ChanceHMiller Same for 512. When I have something go big on Reddit the traffic is very good.

@ismh i rode your coattails all the way to the bank on that one, don't worry

@ChanceHMiller Yep, it’s also a great resource. I’ve landed there multiple times after doing a search of an obscure topic.

@ChanceHMiller Same with YouTube and Reddit. Twitter basically did nothing, but when something is linked on Reddit it’s going big.

@ChanceHMiller A lot of the breakthroughs in AI Image generation are through Reddit...and all of those subreddits are now dark.

So many of my bookmarks disappeared!

@ChanceHMiller @flargh exhibit #23435 of why relying on unregulated “free public services” under private control for business or public use is a bad idea. In my coutry, Spain, “whatsapp” is the defacto communication tool and drives me bananas, people do not know how to send SMS/texts anymore, is that bad
