Hello from Tootle, the upcoming Mastodon app for @elementary OS from @bleakgrey

How to Find a Radical

Search on Google using this WordPress-capturing pattern:

"/category/{topic}/page/{howradical}"

(don't forget the quote marks!)

where {topic} is a category word like "dogs" or "politics", and {howradical} is a number from 1 to about 300, gauging enthusiasm towards the topic (50 seems enough IMO).

Example:

google.com/#q=%22/category/cat

It tends to find out-of-mainstream sites with, uh, let's say... "exuberant" content.

Morning wonderful people! Apparently, we have entered the 'new normal', at least, according to Jim Zemlin of the Linux Foundation as Microsoft announces a tiny, tiny Linux OS twitter.com/jzemlin/status/986
Good news on the FOSS side with Nextcloud winning a tender to supply the Geman government with its platform for three years. That's over 300,000 users. techradar.com/news/german-gove

Ready Player One brought up a lot of nostalgic feelings for me. You'll probably understand why if I say this is a sketch of me as a child playing Space Invaders.

Oh great, friday evening 🍿: tmobile austria is storing all user passwords as plaintext and people started to hack into their web frontend running a 2.6.x series kernel last updated in 2011.

Of course people on twitter are dogpiling on the company atm, but wow what a shitshow

I notice the local Odeon is screening Mary and the Witch's Flower next week. Is this worth seeing? I haven't watched any anime for a long time.

@eliotberriot Hey Eliot, how accurate are the stats from mnm?

Late Night Linux | Episode 34.

It’s Ikey Doherty's (the Linux Badass of Solus) last show and Jesse’s last for a while, Félim is off sick.

Graham Morrison joins to discuss 2 factor authentication, Firefox OS, a new DNS service, Linux-Libre security, and whether they can move away from centralised social media.

I had the privilege of meeting the creator of the Ruby programming language recently and, yes, he is a very nice chap . The language hit its 25th anniversary this year, but Matz is really passionate about evolving the language for the next 25 years. Here's a piece on what he had to say. techradar.com/news/ruby-is-ali

If you're working on open source projects that are focused on making people's lives better then get in touch. I'd love to hear what you're doing.

I've been writing a series and so far we've covered an organisation bringing high-quality education to the remotest parts of the world; a father who crowd-sourced and built a prosthetic robotic arm for his daughter; and a scientist designing 3D printable microscopes being used to test water in Africa. mastodon.social/media/ixo9XQ2V

So what's happening in your federated verse, Mastodon?

I walked past two muslim men leaving the local mosque today and there was deep sorrow etched on their faces. Meanwhile the first thing our Foreign Secretary had to say after the London attacks was: "Our wells of tolerance are drying up". This country has never tolerated terrorists. I can only assume he thinks the government should clamp down on the religious freedoms we have in the UK, because of what extremists are doing. We should be coming together not alienating sections of our society.

Mucking about with elementary OS Loki (0.4.1) post install. Don't recall having problems with Bluetooth in the past, as experienced this time. Easy enough to fix with bluetoothctl, but spoils what has been a polished experience so far.

Yeah, I think it's probably time that language filter appeared. Unless a translate option is added instead? I don't necessarily want to block people just because they speak a different language.

I'd like to be able to change my local timeline to a different instance's local timeline without changing my instance. Like, I seem to be following more people from witches.town, and I'd like to see what's happening over there without sifting through the federated timeline.

"I put google home in my home and now google knows everything about me" ...
"All I did was put Amazon Alexa in my home and now Amazon knows everything about me" ...
"I drove a nail through my own foot - now I am stuck to the floor and it hurts"

Remember, if you plan to knife anyone make sure you have good grades. This country is truly becoming for the privileged few and not the many.

Tried to read a piece about the Guardian relying on readers' support but it was behind a paywall on the FT.
