Maybe I'll #knit some socks? I have this massive skein of grey yarn, the same I knitted my bag out of, it's enough for a pair of long socks. Maybe I need to conquer my fear of sock #knitting, and it is something to focus on.
Any #knitters got a good recipe for a beginner on how to knit socks, preferably toe up.
More concerned about the heel than anything else, I had a recipe from old on how to turn the heel row for row, but I've lost it completely.
@Joystick_Hero I knitted a bag I'm quite proud of, but I'm very much a casual knitter, just a lot of fingerless gloves and dice pouches.
@Corvusheart Having the ability to take "thin rope" and transform it into anything that isn't thin rope is an amazing process that causes me to find even casual projects both rad and confounding.
Anyway, you should definitely do the thing; even if the heel thing ends up not working out you'll be refining an art form that is way outside my wheelhouse, and that's cool.
@Corvusheart My basic sock pattern comes from Knitting for Dummies and is free online. It's toe-up with a short-row heel.
@DialMforMara thanks! I started a sock from the cuff down, at the heel turning now, putting it down cause finger cramps :p
@Corvusheart Wendy Johnson has a bunch of toe-up sock patterns, some of which are beginner-friendly. Some of them are available free: http://wendyknits.net/finished-work-free-patterns-tips/sub-page/ but if you can get her "Socks from the Toe Up" from the library, it has a lot of toe, heel, and cuff options that you can mix and match.
@Corvusheart This is a super late reply, but: this is my favourite toe-up sock recipe! The heel and toe both use short rows. :) http://knitty.com/ISSUEsummer06/PATTuniversalsock.html #knitting
@Corvusheart Knitting is one of those things that I see and think "wow, that's a cool skill that I should look into", but I end up... Not looking into it. There's too many cool skill sets out there and I'm easily distracted.
That is to say that I don't have anything directly helpful here, but if you do manage to get this going I'd love to hear about your experience.
