I've always struggled with the concept of self love, like many of us I think of it as being an act of supremacy, the idea that I can only love myself if I am better than everyone else.
But if someone only loves you when you behave a certain way, when you are succeeding & exceptional, then it's not really love. It's the same with your self. I'm trying to look at my flaws & shortcomings full in the face, & not just accept them but LOVE them.

Because a shortcoming is a beautiful thing that makes us human and whole, & we love people because they are human, & we want them to be safe & happy, regardless of their flaws, including their flaws.
Today I've even managed to remember things I'm ashamed of & think, how wonderful, sometimes I am eg. inconsiderate, that's part of what makes me whole, & I can work on it. When I need to be perfect to feel safe, criticism is annihilating & life is very painful.

@Damage This is beautiful.
At one point when I was being critical of myself a counsellor asked, "what do you say to someone who tells you their story?"
I said, "I usually tell them they did the best they could at the time. I encourage them to be kind to themselves."
She said, "Then what makes you think that you are better than everyone else and don;t deserve that same forgiveness and space?"
I found that question helpful and return to it often. 🦋
