Hello everyone! I’d like to make an #introduction , if I may.
My name is Donald, and I’m from South Carolina, USA.
After many discussions with friends and family, I’ve decided that my life and future would be better suited joining my S/O in #scotland away from the volatility that’s currently sweeping my country.
I’m a huge advocate of #yimby and #publictransit , love #f1 (yes I know, it’s ironic) and would do anything for my family, including uprooting everything for their safety and future.
@Deblackmon3 Good luck! I'm sure you've done all your research but the UK government is almost as anti-immigrant as your new US government is. It's by no means easy to get the paperwork to bring your family over to Britain even if you're married to a UK citizen.
I hope it all works out well for you with the minimum of financial & bureaucratic pain possible.
@losttourist thank you, sir! I have been doing quite a bit of research on the topic, which it looks like a fiancé visa would be the easiest to at least get myself over there (my S/O and the boys are all UK citizens), which then gives me the opportunity to marry within 6 months and then become a resident for 5 years before applying for citizenship. Fortunately for me, my current job is remote and I've been exploring the option with company leadership of working overseas.
@Deblackmon3 Yep, that will work. Do make sure you & your partner research the financial requirements (minimum job income or high level of personal savings) as those are quite high and there's no realistic way round them.
Back in the day I used to be a mod on Reddit's /r/IWantOut
and there were almost weekly posts from people (often but not always Americans) horrified that it was so difficult for them to come and legally join their spouse/partner in the UK. I've left Reddit a couple of years ago but I would imagine that particular subreddit is still a very useful resource.
It's all possible but there are lots of hoops to jump through. I wish you the very best of luck for a smooth process!
