After a ceasefire we should let Ukraine quickly join the EU and make it an economic powerhouse, russian occupied territories in Ukraine will be miserable. Also as part of the EU there will be security guarantees. EU and Ukraine together will easily beat Russia economically…and that’s why Russia doesn’t want a ceasefire or peace…
@geopolitics

@ErikJonker @geopolitics Not at all sure about this analysis. When were you last in the Ukraine? I think the #EU should do everyhing in it's power to prevent either the #USA or #Russia grabbing their mineral wealth. We (as a true Europeans) should also be doing everything we can to help our Ukrani friends towards harmonisation, tthen convergence and then transitional membership. Whilst their elites still adopt a militarische stance in their external diplomatic relations they are just not ready yet. n.b. I choose my words carefully.

@Palky @geopolitics we added countries like Romania also quite quickly (maybe too quickly) , ofcourse Ukraine has to meet the requirements but that is work to be done.
And the mineral deal, I am afraid that is inescapable, Trump holds to many cards for the short-term. But I hope I am wrong.

@ErikJonker @Palky @geopolitics As a Romanian, I'm glad we were let in the EU when we were. Things aren't perfect, we still have a long way to go, but the requirements and financial support removed the worst excesses of corruption and complacency.

The fact that the most corrupt politicians couldn't touch EU funds because they were tracked while Romanian funds could be more easily redirected meant the average person could physically see the difference between regions that were using EU funds to improve lives and those that were all talk, no action.

We still have a long way to go, and a lot more work to do, but it's so much easier to mobilize against corruption inside the EU compared to outside it.

@Barbarian @ErikJonker @geopolitics I am so pleased for you and all Romanians that the EU is serving you well.
Here in benigjted Blighty our oligarchs can only see as far as their offshore accounts.
To have had them exposed to EU scrutiny was a good reason to pour money into the Leave campaign war chest.
Now, where is the UK in the world?
As always 'follow da money'

@Palky @ErikJonker @geopolitics Well, nobody thought at this was coming, even only thinking about it. But it was obvious that #trump plays his cards without any hesitation. This is the way he all his life ever has done, brutalice, bully, threats and blackmail. The #eu had to make a deal with #ukraine that eu for there support had some mineral guarantees. Then trump has nothing in it.

@ErikJonker @geopolitics If you mean quicker than the 2030s (which we're all hoping for the ceasefire), *quickly* joining the EU would do the opposite of making it an economic powerhouse. Joining after a 2025 ceasefire would collapse its economy in weeks.

@ErikJonker @geopolitics Let Ukraine join as soon as they are ready. No reason to wait. It was the Revolution of Dignity and Euromaidan that led to Russia's invasion of Crimea, in other words: Ukraine's wish to join EU. It had nothing to do with NATO, Russia isn't afraid of NATO, otherwise they wouldn't remove troops from the border with NATO in the north. Let Ukraine join EU as soon as possible.

Another reason Russia (or Putin) doesn't want peace short of victory is that despots who start wars and lose them have a terrible retirement plan. That's why despots who are losing wars struggle to keep the wars going.
