Internet history my wife told me:

When LiveJournal did a ham-handed purge of adult content from their site, it took down a lot of fanfiction communities. In response, fandom founded AO3 (Archive Of Our Own), a non-profit, privacy-respecting, censorship-resistant host for fanfics.

It's happening again with #Tumblr. Tumblr was great for hosting fanart, and there isn't yet an AO3 equivalent for fanart communities. There's a huge opportunity here if someone could make one.

@nindokag Google tried banning adult content on Blogger as well, back in 2015, but did reverse that decision after users' outcry: theverge.com/2015/2/27/8119553
