@jbond I was actually not aware that "days are numbered", "writing on the wall" (and possibly "written in stone"; though guess that is more something historical, and/or perhaps related to Moses and the Stone Tablets), came from that biblical story.
@FiXato There's a lot of symbology there. I suspect adding vowels to Jewish writing in 2 different ways to create nouns or verbs and the associated wordplay is quite high level with many more levels below.

But filtered via the FitzGerald translation by someone who would have been well aware of the Belshazzar's feast story and the implications from Persian history.
