I just saw someone link to this page as an authoritative source. Is it just me or it needs some serious rework? https://github.com/tootsuite/documentation/blob/master/Running-Mastodon/Resources-needed.md

It was last updated in July 2017. Listing % of CPU and RAM used seems pointless, as if you are not utilizing close to 100% of what you have, then you are wasting money / could configure Mastodon to use more. Sidekiq threads and DB_POOL should be the same number, always. Disk usage seems like an odd metric, it's user-uploaded data.

Contrary to popular belief, I think that Mastodon is quite resource-efficient for what it does. The only resource hog is webpack, and only during JS precompilation. That process could be outsourced to a different machine so it's not really a runtime requirement. With jemalloc, the actual runtime doesn't use all that much RAM.

For the number of users mastodon.social is serving, this setup is pretty cheap.

@gargron In Mastodon's current state, how many users do you think an instance would need to have to become prohibitively expensive and/or slow? Or this that even possible to reasonably estimate?

Can you share how much CPU time it takes to execute a typical (non-static) query?

I'm quite ignorant of Rails: do you need to spawn a separate interpreter per core? Is there any sharing between them?

@Gargron I think some real live examples would be nice. Like an instance with around 100/1000/10.000 users and how much resources it has how much does it use. An estimated range how much resources for how much users would be nice to know in advance.
