honestly I think that ability for admins and mods to manually highlight some tags could be a lot more useful in terms of community building and tag discovery. However it is possible I am looking at this from a specific point of view of a special interest instances of up to a certain size. :)

@eylul @Gargron I feel like a lot of the reactions so far stem from one of two places:

1. If it's global, it could somehow be manipulated

2. If it's local, it could be used for harassment

I think local trends could be super super useful for building communities. But I also think that measures could be taken globally to prevent gamification ("Gee, 90% of this tag only comes from a one or two instances that many people have blocked!")

e.g. mastodon.art has often monthly "a sketch a day" type events, and it would be a nice way to indicate current happening by highlighting the tag without having to wait for it to trend and or have to compete with something from fediverse that might be unrelated that shows only because it is popular but off-topic.

I can see it (personally) being very useful to topic focused communities more so than trending tags.

@eylul Yeah, that's a good point, too. It'd be kind of neat for instances to feature things that they care about.

@deadsuperhero I really dislike the idea of autopilot popular/count number based schemes, because it just advantages early adopters or people with big follower counts etc. which just pushes a platform to a publishing platform from a dialogue one. Does the number of retoots and stars the only indicator of an idea worth sharing?

Like, there's just a button on posts that say "Feature", and it gets added to a list. Only 3-5 entries get displayed at a time, rendered randomly on page load. Maybe they only stay on that list for a limited amount of time, and then new things would then have to get featured?

I'm purely looking at this from a community-building point of view. Like a "Toot of the day" thing

I mean I know mastodon.art does this to a point between the new accounts auto-following the admin account, and @Curator and the mods being very active about highlighting things (sometimes to the point of being accidentally mistaken for bots, which is then promptly corrected to hilarity for everyone involved ;D )

Again this boils to having choices, as instances having different needs and focus perhaps.

@zeezeemoomoo @Gargron This is nonsencical, he used his most precious resource, (time), to build something he wanted to see. You have the time to write this toot, so you can use it instead to make something useful, bit by bit. That's what I am doing anyway, building something I want to exist, tiny bit at a time. You can do the same and it will be much more appreciated than what you just wrote. You'll feel better for it too, believe me.

1. I understand that, I have very little free time personally, but that's why I don't abuse people like Eugen who use their limited time on this Earth to build something others find useful. It can burn them out and then there will be less people willing to create things.

2a. For a long time, he did not. He does now, but that doesn't mean he lost all say over the software he has started, Windows is paid and they don't give a shit about what you say.

@zeezeemoomoo @Gargron 2b. 2b. Eugen does listen, but there's one group of people who say he should do X and another to do Y. He makes a choice and gets personally abused by the group that didn't get their wish. This is UNACCEPTABLE and IRRATIONAL.

3. No, but he is the originator, most significant contributor and director of the project and at some point he has to make a decision on things, which is guaranteed to irk somebody the wrong way.
