I'm gonna add dat:// and gopher:// to linkable protocols in toots. IPFS hasn't decided on a URI format yet, I don't think anything else needs this treatment?
@lord I dunno, dat:// and gopher:// are websites, irc:// is not.
@gargron Gopher aren't websites…
Some web browser know how to handle this protocol but not every web browser…
Same for dat://
@Gargron ssb:// (secure scuttlebutt)?
@gaditb Right. Is that popular? Does it host pages?
@gaditb Can't really find any info on ssb:// URIs so I'll pass
@Gargron I suck at estimating -- I have no idea if it's popular. It hosts content within its network -- not exactly pages, but yes social posts/content within its network.
e.g. this is a HTTP-bridge viewer for the url
ssb://%25Pg7%2BlVNJS13o2GBftbMLC2V0BgB3PSeX1L3cVdnUifc%3D.sha256 :
https://viewer.scuttlebot.io/%25Pg7%2BlVNJS13o2GBftbMLC2V0BgB3PSeX1L3cVdnUifc%3D.sha256
There are definitely people on here who can talk much better than me about this if you ask -- I've only looked a little at it.
@Gargron This is a bit later but relevant: Firefox added recognition for it in 59:
https://blog.mozilla.org/addons/2018/01/26/extensions-firefox-59/
@D_ I mean they haven't decided if it's like, ipfs://some-hash or ipfs:some-hash or ipfs:/some-hash and until it's official there's no point adding it, nothing can open that shit anyway. People usually just link to a gateway which is https.
@Gargron I dunno, maybe ftp:// ?
@InspectorCaracal @Gargron tempted to be obnoxious and suggest magnet: ;)
@Jo @noelle @InspectorCaracal @Gargron nah i think it's a good suggestion tbh
@er1n @Jo @noelle @InspectorCaracal @Gargron mail: ? sms: ? tel: ? ssh: ?
@noelle @InspectorCaracal For ftp there's probably good reasons why such an old protocol is not autolinked on any other platform.
@Gargron I'd say do the ones Firefox added in 59.0 - ssb, dat, dweb, ipfs, ipns
@flussence I guess. That lets me not really make the call on this one, lol
@Gargron
Right now, if you want IPFS to work correctly with everyone, you prefix it with https://ipfs.io/
The browser plugins interpret it and redirect it to the local gateway if there is one.
So you do not need to do anything yet.
@Gargron Can you make a mailto: type thing for Mastodon?
@Gargron I am looking through a list of URI schemes (https://www.iana.org/assignments/uri-schemes/uri-schemes.xhtml) and secondlife:://, irc://, and ms-settings-notifications:// all stand out as things that clearly need to be linkimajified. Clearly.
news:// might be fun for nostalgia value maybe?
Realistically I don't see much of anything on that list that feels Needed, which ones have comedy value for you?
@gargron Why not irc:// ?
