@Gargron while I'm happy about this, the flipside here is (this has been going on for a while and is not limited to the US) that people are leaving facebook for.... Instagram. which is owned by facebook.

True, but perhaps the ownership doesn't play a part in this?

What I mean is, if Insta was independent, it seems likely these people would still be moving to it?

I think that's the reason. Facebook is social media for uncles nowadays, so the cool kids #LeaveFacebook and go straight being exploited through Instagram.
