Despite being free software, Mastodon as a project takes a hardline stance against nazis

The covenant has been added approx. one month ago so that for the first time in Mastodon's history, our project could make "no nazis" a part of our branding.

@Gargron Thank you. t&fb getting more and more oppressive. People will always be driven awaym because some have very little tolerance for oppression. YOu already know all this, but thank you for taking a hard line against nazis.

@Gargron I love u

We need a mastodon equivalent of YouTube

@monkeyless does it have a great community and anti-nazi policies like here

@SirTB comunity is small and slow growing... did't see any nazis there... but i think it's because the project itself is very small=/

@SirTB @Gargron go make some! it might be a great project to start if you're into videomaking. Or maybe ask your fav youtubers to adopt it. The tech is there, the content is made by the people.

@Gargron Language note: perhaps "free from white supremacy, anti-semitism and transphobia of other platforms" would read better as "free from the white supremacy, anti-semitism and transphobia of other platforms". Including the definite article seems more idiomatic.

@Gargron I think what you have is better than "no nazis" since it makes a genuine tangible promise to protect people.
This is better than just spreading general hate in the direction of anyone vaguely right wing, which seems to be what many people are moving towards 😤

@Gargron this is great Eugen thank you so much! 👍

This is the right approach. You have to be proactive. I love Mastodon for its openness and free speech, but there are, of course limits to these freedoms.

@Gargron Wouldn't "supremacy" be a better choice of words than "white supremacy"? Wouldn't that encompass all kinds of supremacy?

@gargron to me something like this would be better 'Active moderation against all forms of online harassment and abuse - we want users of this network to be able to talk online without the fear of being harassed or abused by others, as happens on other networks. Specifically we take a definite stand against speech that is racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic or anti semitic, as this is incompatible with the fundamental rights of people in these groups.'

@gargron I.e. put the general principle before the specific examples. To me the primary thing that is important is protecting people from abuse, but then it needs to be made clear that speech that attacks or marginalises whole groups of people will not be allowed because it is incompatible with that idea, and with the rights of people in those groups to express themselves online.

@gargron another way to put the second sentence might be 'Specifically we take a definite stand against hate speech directed against people on the basis of their race, gender, sexual orientation or religious beliefs, as this is incompatible with the fundamental rights of people targeted in this way.'

@gargron you could add '... including their rights to express themselves freely online'. I.e. spell out the point that to claim free speech rights for hate speech is contradictory and hypocritical.
