A bunch of gamers in France are trying to get regulators to stop game companies from shutting down online games after a few years.

They argue that they bought a good that the seller has rendered inoperable not a service.

This won’t work. You can’t force companies to maintain online services forever.

PC Gamer · Gamers seek legal win that would stop developers from rendering online games unplayable: 'It is an assault on both consumer rights and preservation of media'By Tyler Wilde

@carnage4life You should be able to force companies to design products in a way that doesn’t require them to maintain services forever for the products to remain operable.

@Gargron@mastodon.social @carnage4life@mas.to the game in question is THE CREW wich is a single player gamw with no online component. its just updating the game and removing the "ask if user has license"

@Gargron @carnage4life
Or simply require products to be sold with a clear minimal expiration date for said component.
And have a minimum requirement of at least 2 years as of initial publication, with defined terms on minimum service quality.

I'm not well versed in gaming in general, and online gaming in particular, but for clear consumer information should never be an option.

To me that's the heart of the issue at hand.

@enthraxxx
100% this. Just like hardware shop have a clearly communicated end of life, software (like games) should have a clearly communicated expected lifetime and the company should have enough runway to make that happen (pending disasters outside their control).
