Interesting perspective re: the R&M fandom and why the show creates so many wannabe-Ricks zennistrad.tumblr.com/post/147

@Gargron I wouldnt say it creates ricks, i would say people who were ricks already identify with rick

@Laurelai None of them actually are Ricks though. I think that's the whole point with the sauce. The sauce was completely random and arbitrary, a subversion of any higher goal, since for Rick, nothing matters. Rick would not stand in line for a day for the sauce, he would not trade his car for a packet of that sauce. Those are the things those fans did.

But if you simply mean to say they're assholes like Rick, yes.

@Gargron Yes thats what i mean, they are Rick in the sense of being awful to other people, they cling to his image like a lucky rabbits foot or a talisman hoping that they become smart like Rick, when all they are is evil like Rick.

@Laurelai the point of my original post was more or less that R&M is about how terrible Rick's life is because of his behaviour. But because the crime and the punishment are separated, these viewers only see the crime and adopt it as validation of their own similar behaviours

@Gargron Right, i saw that. It still confuses me how they can gain validation from it, i marathoned the series the other day to gain some context and it seemed clear to me that Rick is a psychopath. I watched every episode and i was horrified at Ricks behavior and it made me look at some of my own flaws. This kind of shitty behavior is found in literally any fandom (my little pony anyone?) and its a function *of fandoms*. Not saying people shouldn't enjoy shows, but when you invest ego and emotion, making it a part of your identity in it, toxic behavior happens. When you introduce competition toxic behavior happens.
I think without this show those people would be just as toxic and only would have glommed on to another fandom to express it.

@Gargron They start with Caillou, Then R&M, then Big Bang Theory... And others.

I seem to find a lot of these people recently. They treat you like complete shit, are hypocrites, ignore you, shun you aside, etc.

What do they have in common? They all watch R&M and you don't.

@Gargron This is really insightful, I love it. These people seem to think they can cargo-cult their way into being a supergenius by demanding sauce.

It's not so strange since Rick is shown getting away with his bad behavior again and again. Maybe it'll change in the next season, we'll see.

Bojack Horseman handles this a lot better. The main character's misery and failures are on full display, and he thinks he gets away with everything because he doesn't realize reality isn't a sitcom. But reality says otherwise
