Eugen @Gargron

What can I do to spread word about Mastodon even further?

· Web · 11 · 14

@sir oh hey i just saw you in HN comments about gratipay i think

@Gargron oh hey I just saw you toot about Mastodon evangalism I think

@sir Look it's a lot more exciting when you recognize people from a different website

Oh shit, stickers. I forgot about the stickers 😩

@Gargron

I was gonna say stakers

as in vampire hunters with Mastodon branding

stickers is probably more workable tho

@wxcafe @sydneyfalk @gargron actually, Vampires live forever undisturbed, if we get one invested in the platform they could provide some good PR for a loooong time.

(btw, camarilla.social anyone?)

@Gargron I have some cheap-ass sticker paper so maybe I'll print some bootleg ones and stick them to random people's laptops, is that a viable evangelism strategy?

@Michcioperz go for it, let me finish up the design with @dopatwo first though

@Gargron this is such an underground tactic, I love it! :D

@Gargron

more seriously: make a QR code that incorporates the Mascotdon™ in some way but explains nothing else, include it on the stickers, point it at m.s signup, or the instance picker, or something that directs to m.s UNLESS it's closed and then redirects to the instance picker

@Gargron find a journalist at either the NYT to write about counterculture alternatives to Twitter & Facebook. That's a big editorial push lately AFAICT.

@pnathan @emelie and I e-mailed a bunch of journos about the 2.0 release, though I think NYT was not among them, but we basically got fuck all in response which is a bit demoralizing (to me at least)

@Gargron @emelie Interesting. I really don't know how to cold-contact anyone these days: email is deluged, and Twitter notifications are tooooxxxxic.

You might try poking Zeynep Tukefici, she does a lot of social media / propaganda research - she might be interested in talking.

@Gargron @pnathan @emelie
Don't be, press releases is a long-term action...

@Gargron ride an elephant through town with giant "JOIN MASTODON" signs hanging on either side

@Gargron buy a space probe and send it beyond the reaches of our solar system.

@dredmorbius Hey... The user you are responding to is dead 😕

@Gargron Sorry to hear that, although it isn't visible to anyone not knowing them personally, have you given any thought about how to handle this in Mastodon?

@Gargron you could do a ted talk (maybe start with tedx)

@kai hello

this is my talk about personal space

you're all in it, bye

@Gargron lol. my local tedx is always looking for speakers. no clue what's going on in your neck of the woods

@Gargron Any free advertising sites? Linux publications/blogs

@Messgorough @Gargron People are welcome to post about mastodon on our forum, though it may not be (read: definitely is not) big enough to be helpful, alas!

@Gargron is the patreon large enough to hire social media "influencers" yet?

'cause if so, that

Or you could have money for food, your choice

@gargron Ask people to write more articles about it. Podcasters who love you and what you do.

@Gargron You should find irl ads of facebook, twitter etc. and put a Mastodon sticker over the brand name.

@MeimuHakurei I live in Germany, social media websites don't have physical ads here (do they anywhere?!)

@Gargron Literally further, redo the Bebo "A Message from Earth" thing

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Messag

(Bebo users voted on messages to send to Gliese 581c and they hired time on a radio telescope to send it there)

(If there is life there, they're going to be very confused in twelve years)

@Gargron Get on helpareporter.com/ as a source, pitch an article to opensource.com, speak (or delegate folks to speak) at upcoming tech/activism conferences

@Gargron email journos again once the general frustration over twitter/facebook's shady advertising/tracking strategies has been reached

@Gargron Facebook & YouTube posts that displays the kind of content that is to be expected on mastodon. Showing clearly the difference between a feed of spammy self-promotion and a feed of active discourse. Something like that

@Gargron Whenever anyone says anything like about promoting something I always thing "POSTER CAMPAIGN! tabloid size posters with big huge letters everywhere!!!" because that's like the only promotional thing I have experience with that worked. But on the scale of something as international as mastodon I have no idea

@Gargron

1) Infiltrate Scientology
2)
3) Profit

@Gargron It would be great if we could support Mastodon by buying and wearing Mastodon T-shirts. High quality, well-produced t-shirts, not some cafepress or zazzle crap. Maybe ThinkGeek would sell them?

@skiring @gargron
Redbubble generally does a quality product. Also they have proper EU shipping so we don't get hit with import duties that double the cost.

@frankiesaxx @Gargron We ordered a shirt from Redbubble a while ago to check for quality. It was not good, so we won't be buying anything more from them.

@skiring @gargron
Ah okay. Maybe it's changed. We got 3-4 from there maybe a year and a half/two years ago and it was quite good and they've held up well.

@Gargron taking my experience with butter and jam, a huge, hot, flat knife seems to do the trick, you might need to heat up mastodon slightly to make it spread more evenly

@gargron very good mastodon posts that people screencap and share on other social media networks until they become all artifacted.
