Oh my god oh my god the Telegram cryptocurrency I thought was a scam was not a scam they're serious about that oh my god ahaha techcrunch.com/2018/01/08/tele

Unless Techcrunch fell for that video and no other sources I guess

Eugen @Gargron

Side note: I wouldn't recommend using Telegram; they market themselves as a secure app but there's no e2e encryption unless you specifically enter a "secret chat", and then it uses some custom crypto they came up with. It's all very dodgy.

@Gargron Yeah. Loudly advertising something as encrypted and having it be non-encrypted by default is exactly what I would do if I was being paid by a government to make spying software

@Gargron i've heard issues with Signal & Telegram, what is a good option then? Wire app?

@sivy Wire, yeah. It's fully open source, it uses the OMEMO algorithm for e2ee that the Signal team came up with, and they announced you're going to be able to host your own Wire servers (federation)

@Gargron There's absolutely no basis for this claim but that was the only "issue" I thought Signal had.

@sivy @hypolite No, nothing to do with Russia, but I recall some asshole comments from Moxie regarding decentralization. Oh and the thing when he wanted millions of USD to let Wire use OMEMO medium.com/@wireapp/axolotl-an

@Gargron Aww geez, Signal doesn't have issues but its founder has, sounds to me like the background track of this past year with the Weinstein et al. stories and GOG's unclear stance about GG (at best).

@hypolite @gargron @sivy well, around the fediverse, people dislike the centrally hosted nature of Signal--like, you could host your own server if you wanted, but it wouldn't interact with the regular Signal network at all

@sivy @Gargron signal seems like a good secure texting alternative, reviews of the open whisper system it's built on have been good from what I have read. @Gargron is right about the dodgy telegram encryption, I've not heard any good things about that end. If security/privacy isn't at the top of your list though, it's probably not the worst out there 🤷‍♂️

@sivy @Gargron Wire is awesome. Plus it serves as a Skype alternative :)

@Gargron And it's goign to be way worse if they're going to push blockain validation through their app, I hope they won't try an enabled-by-default mining/validation. That'd be a very bad move for people with light batteries.

@Gargron I wouldn't recommend it either. I'm using Signal which comes with a strong encryption and as little metadata as possible: signal.org/

@scroom @Gargron
Don't forget tox.chat which seems the most secure to me. But the most important thing for a IM is having users..and most of them fails here. Even Telegram fails comparing to Whatsapp. But why would I use Tox then? To talk to myself?

Telegram is secure (maybe not as the others), has a lot of features and it is always improving. It has some cons but overall I'm happy of it and it has a lot of users, so I stick with that.

@danyspin97 @Gargron More and more people use Signal. I would say that I've got 70 Signal contacts. But if they want to contact they have to use Signal or SMS. I refuse to use WhatsApp.

@scroom @danyspin97 @Gargron Security experts largely agree that Signal is safe, but Telegram who knows. "Why I told my friends to stop using WhatsApp and Telegram"
medium.freecodecamp.org/why-i-

And even if you'd use Telegram, you don't know what they'll do on their closed source servers. You metadata is exposed.

@Gargron Please tell me that custom crypto is a secret word for pig latin cipher

@Gargron of course an application for [mainly] sending kitty stickies isn't a good option *if* you need a high-assurance channel with mandatory crypto.

But for pics and shitposting? Tel's best at the moment.

@Gargron Their founder bet me "$1M USD" over Twitter that a backdoor would be found in Signal within 5 years. He's all over the place.

@Gargron It's a decent chat app but it never should have marketed itself as a crypto app

@Gargron It really just is a chat app with groups and voice calls that happens to have (dodgy) secret chats
