"Slack decides to close down IRC and XMPP gateways" news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1

@Gargron I'm a bit sad and amused seeing people reaction, what did they expected ;u;

We need better foss working/teaming chat app ~

Here's a tip: Use @matrix instead of Slack

@ajroach42
Not really; IRC and XMPP are very poor in features when it comes to permissions and message types or just formatting. On the other hand, @matrix already supports HTML and semi supports Markdown. It has a nice permission (power level) system, so it can be fine tuned much better than the other two. We switched from Slack to Matrix two months ago and we donʼt regret.
@Gargron

@Gargron @matrix That actually is a useful tip, as we're demoing MS Teams (a... somewhat subpar Slack ripoff, near as I can make out) at the office right now.

Not that our heavily MS shop would go for it, but better than that defaulting to Slack, perhaps, if Teams doesn't pan out.

@greyduck @matrix @Gargron Microsoft Teams is absolutely horrible. I don't like Slack much, but compared to Teams it's the best product ever.

@Gargron @matrix

If matrix could give us something even close to a teams feature it'd be easier for less technical users

@RussSharek @Gargron @matrix Wire is also not too bad and has team features

@charlag @Gargron @matrix

I have a small group of non-technical yet reasonably intelligent users I'm trying to migrate off of slack into something both team focused and ideologically sound.

@RussSharek
Matrix introduced a feature called "communities" some time ago. I don't know Slack but they describe it as similar to Slack Teams but more powerful, you can read more about it here medium.com/@RiotChat/communiti

@Gargron
I whish the company I'm working for could do that...

@Gargron @matrix
me: hey, fellow coworkers, we should consider using matrix, so no one owns our work chat data and we can have better data security?
management: nah i don't trust it plus like slack is free??

So much lost opportunity in the small business world due to misunderstanding and distrust of open-source software.

@Gargron @musicmatze @matrix

How does matrix provide a way to have a closed workspace for groups? Like an enviroment where you can create communication channels for just that group?

@musicmatze @webmind @Gargron @matrix

I am talking about a closed enviroment with a collection of channels. Quite something else

@matrix @Gargron RocketChat is viable too unless you are specifically emphasizing on encryption which I've not explored in RC

@gargron @matrix I really hope Riot.im finds a different default server to direct registrations to, Presence is disabled on the Matrix home server so nobody can see when someone is online, and for most people once your instructions go beyond "just click register and make an account" they're right back to things like Slack or Discord.

@Gargron Didn't see that one coming. Nope, not at all. Reminds me, I need to get Matrix going.

@Gargron
Matrix: Needs one heck of a server and you still run into federation issues.

IRC: Runs ridiculously fast on the cheapest VPS my hoster provides.

I honestly don't think XMPP or IRC have less flexible permissions, both have more advanced (and sometimes nonstandard) systems you can use rather than the classic op/user/voiced; whereas Matrix only has a numerical permissions system (its flexible, sure but Xmpp/IRC have similar things)

Disclaimer: I use Matrix and IRC.

@gargron it's was always a matter of time. Nothing last forever.
