Eugen @Gargron

I'm gonna try to put in the time to move the Mastodon blog away from Medium onto our own servers.

@mallaidh sometimes, I really wish websites were a little more like gopher. at least gopher doesn't need to load 2M of scripts and styles to display a couple of sentences of text...

@Gargron Wouldn't it be cool if you could directly deliver the posts through ActivityPub? 🤔

@Gargron Doesn't getting it into medium help for trending articles or something of the like?

@gargron We run our own blog at our company and we tried an experiment where we put content on Medium as well as a syndication target, to try to increase its reach.

We marked the Medium copy (and others) with our own site as the canonical URL in HTML to get search engines to route to us by default.

If you're interested, I could ask how that went.

@gargron @kemonine @ignitionigel So the answer is: not much increase. The main value of syndicating posts we already owned to Medium was minimal, single-digits, maybe 100 extra views for a post. But if it's free (e.g. a computer can do it for you), maybe do it anyway. The main value of Medium in this scenario is whether people actually will see your post on Medium inside Medium's network.

@zigg @Gargron Do canonical URLs work across domains? I assumed search engines would ignore them if they linked to another domain.

@corbin @gargron We didn't see any suggestion they wouldn't. Google's webmaster blog specifically said it's fine for syndication in a 2009 post.

@Gargron Jekyll is a great ruby project for publishing blogs, it outputs static content that’s easy to host

@Gargron Also I wish there was a federated way to share / recommend blog content. That is the real power of medium is that it drives readers to you

@debugninja

May not be quite what you're thinking of, but RSS planets are great way to discover blogs.

@debugninja @Gargron you could always paste the URL in a toot.

But you're asking for something different? A button on the website that does it?

@Gargron apparently I suck at nginx, if you clicked that earlier and were greeted with an error please try again

@Gargron looks like some people were quite critical on hacker news.

@alexduf @Gargron Third party content management is not a viable long-term strategy. A few years, sure, but not long-term.

@Gargron Medium isn’t working out?

@Gargron maybe develop some kind of mastofon plugin using activitypub for Notes that writes down static content to a profile space and can interact with the feed

@Gargron Neat! I'm always excited to see blogs being on their own setup.

@Gargron great. A revival of indipendent blogging is badly needed.

@gargron Netlify has a CMS thing where you can run it off GitHub and let other people edit it. It's all static and done through Markdown.

Make sure it works with Tor browser when you do :)

@Gargron I'm thinking of experimenting with Moveable Type myself to replace Medium.

@art @Gargron Don't forget the dickens. it's the dickens as well!
