Should we modify the old soviet joke about russian?
"Learn Mandy now, before it is compulsory!"
Yes, that one and canto, because of the tones, but I imagine one could become mostly comprehensible.
BTW, I'm not promoting the english alphabet as perfect either - the russian one has more sounds in it. I was all excited about the unifon alphabet in my youth, but nothing ever happened with it :-(
@Gemlog I cannot pronounce zh and x in Mandarin. I pronounced wrong tone of Hainan (island), and my Chinese friends didn't comprehend. 😭
I believe that Latin alphabet and even Cyrillic script are easier to learn than Chinese characters. However, PRC occupies economy here completely. I don't think I have many choices. 🤷🏾♂️
I could choose, I'd probably choose Telugu and Malay language. 🤔
My mother tongue is english. As a teen I learned the greek alphabet (very quickly from a very pretty girl) and a couple of years ago I added cyrillic.
When I take notes I form the letters ala palm pilot graffiti - which i still use for android phones. I also mix in any symbols from math/phys that will save time, like the backwards e for exists or the upside down a for 'all'.
In the late 80's and into the 90's many hong kongers came to my province of BC in canada. I thought cantonese was the main language of china!
For a while a girl tried to teach me a little canto, but I could never say even the simplest sentences correctly :-( She eventually just gave up on me.
