@mask It's decentralized. Had birdsite ever chosen to, they could have blocked based on things like the user's IP. With a decentralized, instance-based system automated blocking like that is off the table. Mastodon requires human admin intervention by virtue of its structure.

@mask @whatthegeek And decentralization, for the same reasons it can be a problem with harassment, can be extremely helpful on other matters (like mass surveillance), so it's not like that feature is a bad thing per se, either... unlike Twitter's attitude to harassment. ^^°

@GinnyMcQueen Makes me think that a smarter blocking feature wouldn't let trolls know they've been blocked. I think Reddit did this—troublesome users were quietly silenced, and they'd continue to rave away in a vacuum without realizing that no one else was seeing their shit.

One of the best anti-troll measures I've seen is invite-only signup. Imzy did this. Might not stop a determined troll, but a lot of these people are lazy shits who won't bother with new accounts if it takes effort.

I'd have thought that if you have to create multiple accounts because someone keeps blocking you, you might get the sense you're the one doing the harassing. Given that most trolls are narcissistic sociopaths, though, that logic has probably escaped him.
