@GottaLaff it’s just so sad but the far right do think that’s fine.
FWIW Republicans largely still refuse to outlaw child marriage, aka legalized statutory rape by a caregiver
I hate far right scum like Trump.
@GottaLaff so sad, really
@GottaLaff Having a child is cheaper in time and money than a 9 hour drive to the abortion clinic?
@Belle @GottaLaff Are the parents certain they wouldn't have all been arrested when they arrived back home? I know a lot of threats are thrown around for stuff like that, I'm not sure if that backwater state is actually following through.
@Belle You don't know what it's like to be poor do you @GottaLaff
@Belle
Being poor closes off a lot of options
@JohnLAlford Mother could have called in sick for one (1!) day. Gas is very cheap in the US. Otherwise she could have asked a family member, friends, neighbours. Start a fund raise for gas. I would do anything to not let my raped 13 year old daughter going through childbirth. Would not be surprised if this story was later found out to be a hoax.
@Belle @JohnLAlford tell me you have no idea about what being poor in the US in a hyperconservative state is like without telling us…
But sure, easy.
@Belle Aren't you special.
"Would not be surprised if this story was later found out to be a hoax."
Time magazine would sure be surprised, seeing as how it first published the story based on interviews with the family.
@mbrailer I've read they caught the rapist, a sixteen year old. That makes the first story more 'checkable'. But I still question the (grand)mothers actions and choices. She could started that GoFundMe earlier and she took two weeks off AFTER her grandchild was born. But she could not take one day off to get her an abortion. I think she could have done more to protect her daughter from this horrible ordeal. No car? Then there is a car friend/relative that can lend one, etc.
@Belle The story isn't merely checkable, it's checked. Time isn't likely to get caught in a hoax, and other publications have since picked up the story.
And it's a trip from Mississippi to Chicago, requiring at least an overnight stay.
And you're certain that poor Mississippians have spare cars they can lend for long trips? And that a woman can ditch work and not come home to a pink slip? And poor folk instinctively use online tools with ease?
Not everyone has these privileges.
@Belle Oh, and I saved the best part for last, something the Time article didn't even consider:
IF the mother could take off work without jeopardizing her job, and
IF someone had a car to lend for a long trip, and
IF they could scrape together enough to pay hundreds of dollars for gas, hundreds more for a hotel, and an abortion on top of that,
THEN they might have been greeted by a gauntlet of "counselors" telling a them they're murderers going to hell.
But that's all doable, eh?
@mbrailer She did take two weeks off after the baby was born, to care for her daughter and granddaughter. No hotel needed, an abortion procedure takes max. 4 hours.
@mbrailer The whole abortion procedure is max. 4 hours, not days. That makes this whole story strange. It would have taken 1 day of. She took 2 weeks of when the baby was born. She could also raise money after the baby was born, to feed it. I think that poor Mississippians own a car of themselves.
@Belle @JohnLAlford Victim blaming much?
@BetsyBeeee @JohnLAlford No questioning the mothers decisions of the 13 year old victim. Could take 2 weeks of work to care after birth of her daughter and grandchild. But could not take one day of to let her have an abortion. Started GoFundMe after birth grandchild. Could have done that sooner too.
@Belle @GottaLaff uh..... 13 year olds don't drive in this county.
@Belle @GottaLaff (not sure what details are in the article, as I don't see a link) the family might not have a reliable car, the immediate expense of gas and accomodations might be more than their available savings, it might require more than one trip, the parent might have a job that will fire them if they try and take a couple days off. yes, the cost of a child will be much greater, but also spread out over time. a majority of Americans say they can't afford a $1,000 emergency expense.
@Belle Really stupid remark. If you don't have the money NOW for the trip it doesn't matter that FUTURE expenses will be greater.
@cuibonobaby She now started a GoFundMe to feed the baby. She could have started that earlier.
@Belle you must be kidding w this response.
@Belle
You're being obtuse for the sake of arguing or engagement, so let me just say go fuck yourself.
@GottaLaff That's far too young and better hope there's no damage. Barbaric.
If she wanted to adopt a baby? Hell no, they wouldn’t let her do that. If she and her younger sibling were pulled from their home by CPS or orphaned, and she wanted to be emancipated and raise her sibling, there is no way in hell they would allow it.
And yet, she’s somehow capable of giving birth and being a mom? They push these laws because they know the family will actually raise the baby, or they will give the child up for adoption.
But the trauma? Well, they don’t have to raise the child - either of them - so they don’t care. The punishment is the point for regressives. (For what, you may ask? having sex? being female? being a parent of a female? being non-white? It depends on the regressive.) That poor girl and her family.
@athena_rising @GottaLaff
There's a physical cost too, at 13 bones and things aren't anywhere near coping with the stress of a birth, and the child may also be affected. It's a pity the medical profession is so shy about speaking out on things like this, but they just hush up and nod along.
The mental effects must be dire too with associated trauma response for the mother and the child in that adopted/social services limbo we seem to think is ok for a developing human. It's cruel, all of it.
@TheDailyBurble @athena_rising @GottaLaff
This story is tragic and fucked up. Please consider donating to the Chicago Abortion Fund to help out others like her:

@GottaLaff I can spell Mississippi and this is closest I ever want to get to that disgusting state.
@Leefellerguy Sigh. That’s what it’s become over the decades. So horrible.
@ianoji @GottaLaff
Be aware that this particular rape took place in 2022:
“In the fall of 2022, Ashley was raped by a stranger in the yard outside her home….”
@GottaLaff This is what the Republicans SCOTUS has done to our children. They all need to be thrown in prison.
@mooseandriosmom Exactly right
@GottaLaff Also Trump: “all legal scholars, both sides, wanted and in fact demanded Roe v. Wade be ended.”
@MisterMoo Yeah, that was classic.
jesusfuckingchrist, they're such monsters!
@IAmDannyBoling At minimum, yes.
@GottaLaff Make no mistake; this is not a problem for Republicans. They WANT this.
@GottaLaff I guess in the future they will only allow abortions if done using an AR-15

@GottaLaff My heart breaks for this girl. Her life will never be the same.
@GottaLaff If this is your god's will, maybe you pray to the devil. #republicans #abortionlaws
@jeridansky @GottaLaff
That's horrible. That poor kid.
