Is there an airline hack that lets the airline choose a family’s seats (and thus not pay their ridiculous seat selection charge), but keeps the family seated together?

Of all the airline upsells in this hellish death by a thousand cuts that air travel has become, this “pay or we will separate you” threat is the one I find most offensive.

@inthehands Last I recall, Delta at least would try to seat minor children with their parents, even if they didn't pay to select seats. (I'm not sure if they still do this-- our kids are no longer minors-- or if other airlines also do this, since for the destinations for our all-family visits Delta was the only practical airline to take.)

Tickets already purchased, sadly, but noted for next time. Thanks!
