Pinned toot

I walked into a business today in a rural town. 2 men behind the counter. I asked my borrower to lead me to a table. He led the way thru a door behind the counter. The other guy stood next to the doorway. I asked him to exit the area before I passed thru. He did.

Then he hollered at the borrower, "Good luck with this one. She wants you to stay 6 ft away." I looked at him bemused, but said nothing.

I'm not the enemy. It's sneaky & deadly. It'll try to come get him some day, but not from me.

If Trump and everyone who isn’t wearing a mask would just do what the man in the picture is doing and #WearAMask - we could be on our way to recovery. #VoteBiden2020

@TonyStark That seems on the mark, since it took about 10 years for the Obama administration's hard work to pull us out of GWB's recession, though Republicans try to blame a crash that happened while GWB was still in office on Obama and give credit for the recovery to Trump. Perhaps with Biden in the WH and a both houses of Congress Democratic, there will be enough stimulus for quicker recovery once there's a vaccine.

It's a political leader stepping forward with a PLAN.

3 1/2 years now that as a nation we've just drifted from photo-op to photo-op, listened to policy decrees by rage-tweet, and watched Air Force One depart for yet another golf outing in Florida.

We are accomplishing nothing.

The BIDEN TEAM can't get here soon enough with its talent, energy, devotion to the public interest, and its IDEAS.

I don’t get any argument that says Trump built a great economy....during good times the economy was riding smooth, but his job was to make sure if there were a bump in the road, we don’t feel it. Pandemic came along and I think most people feel it. Was the cratered economy artificial? He had choices to make and this economy is the result of his final decisions.

They were all wrong.

Or claiming that they're not providing location data when many of the tweets they're sending to cops have location tags, and many of the remainder have location tags added by Dataminr before they're handed over to cops.

Or claiming that they're sending "news alerts" to the police, not "protest surveillance."

Law professor Andrew Ferguson compared this to calling police photographs of protesters "photojournalism."

Come.

The fuck.

On.

Writing in The Intercept, Sam Biddle uses internal whistleblower information and leaked documents from Blueleaks to piece together a picture of how Dataminr provides critical intelligence to law enforcement agencies seeking to violently suppress Black Lives Matter protests.

This is going on despite Dataminr and Twitters' joint assurances that this will no longer happen.

If you've heard of Dataminr, it's probably because of the 2016 shitstorm in which it was revealed that the social media "analysis" company was spying on Twitter users for US intelligence agencies.

Worse: Dataminr's investors included the CIA..and Twitter itself.

Twitter has since divested itself of its stake in Dataminr, but the company remains a "trusted partner" with access to Twitter's firehose - the raw feed of all public tweets.

The present degradation of political discourse is buttressed by the decline of language. This decline is nearly indistinguishable from the sort Orwell complained about in 1945—it is still a mixture of “vagueness and sheer incompetence.” When political language relies on “dying metaphors” (“a few bad apples”), “operators, or verbal false limbs” (“use our voices”), “pretentious diction” (“decolonize the museum”), and plain “lack of precision” (“defund the police”), actual meaning cannot manifest itself, and is supplanted by what Orwell called “emotional meaning”.

In short, instead of being partners in building the public good, Big Tech continues to profit from its erosion. Rather than contribute to the public coffers so that we can fund the public institutions we so desperately need to support, the titans of Big Tech are trying to come to the rescue through philanthropy and expressions of personal goodwill, making private donations at a tiny fraction of their personal wealth into the charitable and non-governmental organizations of their choosing. But these kinds of private drops into the desperately under-funded public pool, in exchange for eschewing the kind of tax responsibilities that working-people face, further erodes coordination and fair distributions of power and resources.

Study confirms that many #ClimateChangeMitigation measures only take effect after decades. Thus, immediate and heavy #mitigation and #ClimateChangeAdaptation efforts are required.

According to the study, the most rapid, significant impacts would come from heavy mitigation of #CO2, #CH4 or #BlackCarbon. These efforts could be visible by mid-century, but likely not before.
