RIP Dolores O’Riordan, lead singer for the band The Cranberries for more than 20 years. 1971 - 2018.

@lattera Ultimately, the MMAP_32bit is a glaring case where slavish devotion to backwards compatibility has screwed us.

MMAP_32bit was a stupid hack done because early amd64 CPUs were slow with memory above the 32-bit address space. So Linux put in this stupid hack to allow folks to work around it. Then folks realized they could make their code "64-bit safe" just by using the flag.

Now they won't get rid of it because of all the things it will break.

I feel for all the people who are prevented from accessing scientific research because of the barriers Springer and Elsevier throw up. It’s a huge loss to society.

This weekend I was working from home and had the typical experience of needing to read some paper. Since the University VPN is a disaster, I just used Sci-Hub. It was wonderful.

When @justinamash & @VoteMeadows, chair of the freedom caucus, vote against surveillance, but scores of Democrats vote for it, then its fair to ask what does our party stand for? If we can’t be unified around the principle of civil liberties, then what is the soul of our party?
