Guys: Mastodon is not run by an overcapitalized POS company. It's a bunch of servers run by a small group of volunteers. And they have created a network that, in character count alone, surpasses bird site.

I have all of my previous follows saved so I might try and work on that later for this account. @LinuxSocist

It's amazing how much a culture imprints on you the more time you spend in it. It becomes hard to rid yourself of it or resist its effects on you.

look i know you all are new around here, but round these parts we have certain RULES so's to keep the peace, and one of those RULES is that SHITPOSTS are POOTS and i dont want to hear otherwise, got it punk

It also took almost a year or two until said bird site went beyond the phase when the fail whale was a daily thing so, really, I think Mastodon is doing fine for something ran by a bunch of volunteers right now.

Ppl judging how Mastodon "failed" in a matter of days definitely didn't remember how the bird site grew (if they were even here), it took YEARS for the bird site to reach critical (mainstream) mass. Slow and steady.

#introductions

Hi, I'm Trev, I'm @Gargron's friend and I'm on @halcy's website now. I used to do community management stuff on mastodon.social in the really early days; now I just write code patches every now and then. No hard feelings.

You can read my profile to see what I'm about.

What I'm interested in most atm is talking to y'all new people coming in from twitter, getting your ideas about federated software, and answering your questions about how it works right now

if something is broken in Mastodon the software and you find it and you can code

submit a pull request

fix it

Okay, two things real quick:

1) A lot of you have some really good suggestions for how the platform should work. I love the enthusiasm. Please take a moment to read the ostatus spec and keep in mind its limitations if you plan to make a suggestion without an accompanying patch.

2) People entering via mastodon.social -- Welcome! Please be mindful that there's an existing userbase and some instances blocked there. Consider joining other instances that may be a better culture fit for you as well.

@vladooku I just saw your username and thought "...what the?!?"

So yes, we have more responsibilities than to just use.
