Starfleet UX designers learned that if they didn't make some bridge consoles explode, captains would ignore damage until the shields failed.
@LoganDice I'm surprised and not surprised at the same time! The punchline is making such a surprisingly deep comment on the nature of humanity.
@LoganDice how long do you think they bikeshedded “should the computers explode”
"...okay, now run that fragile plasma conduit right up into this console, and then that one..."
engineering in the future is a fucking riot
@LoganDice Whoa, whoa, waitaminnit... isn't the whole point of instrument panels and indicators to let you know about stuff like YOUR FREAKIN' SHIELDS FAILING?
But, yeah... basically, it adds to the drama in the battle scenes -- y'know, they take such a hard hit that it surges through the electrical system and blows a console spectacularly.
We ARE talking Original Series here, right?
instrument panels on ships of the other races explode too, just with a higher rate of fatality and worse maiming, the real reason the starfleet ones still explode and throw people back is that they solved the problem ages ago, but the behavior is kept for legacy reasons.
@LoganDice headcanon 100% accepted
@LoganDice People need a reminder that they are applying transrelativistic effects to a city-sized nuclear reactor now and then.
@LoganDice I'll start the implementation of
window.explode() right away!
