The whole Nick Clegg thing reminds me of that time Apple hired the guy who ran Dixons. There’s still something about the British accent that seduces American CEOs.
Anyway, the Dixons guy fucked it all up with a drive for cost-cutting and was swiftly canned. Who got hired instead? Angela Ahrendts, former CEO of Burberry, a company that notably was not a dying shit-heap.
In conclusion, I look forward to Facebook hiring Nicola Sturgeon after her successful campaign for independence in 2020.
Irritated with the UK
Lately I've been getting deeply unhappy with the UK. It's not just Brexit, although that's definitely highlighted pre-existing problems, like:
- lack of investment in public services and infrastructure
- casual racism and sexism
- love of authoritarianism
- love of austerity
- obsession with tradition
- suspicion/hatred of the new
Much of this is 'grass is greener' from recent holidays to Canada and Portland but the differences in outlook and quality of life are huge.
Irritated with the UK
God knows there are problems in Canada and the US, but the UK really feels like its at a nadir. The country is paralysed with Brexit and there's little hope that things could get better politically or economically.
If people knew what the quality of life (retail prices, housing costs, opportunities, etc.) was like in other countries, they'd be outraged. But I'm not convinced most people in the UK are that curious. We still think we're rich, when in fact only a few are.
Irritated with the UK
I also realised recently that almost all of the best developers at Six to Start left to move to the US, or work for US companies. I'm proud they worked with us and I like to think we helped them grow their careers, but the brain drain is very real.

I’ve had a revelatory experience - listened to a radio four show that didn’t make me want to hurl things. Genuine discussion. Attempts to understand the perspectives of others. https://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/play/b0bfz5k2 The series has still invited usual suspects or bad faith people but, as a format, as an approach, it gives me hope.
Off sick so listening to podcasts. Any recommendations? Esp about politics, genre fiction/media, books, kidlit? Current listen: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/mostly-lit/id1099791479?mt=2#episodeGuid=004c5af6-6e28-4231-a70d-4484f8088e7d
