I'm kinda exited that @Mojeek is trying to challange the unchallangeble Google. It seems their recent push to find a viable way to make money in the search space has landend on a vary reasonable stance: Ads are not the fundamental problem. The fundamental problem is tracking.

They are having an AMA on HN and Reddit today:

What was it that started us out on our journey to provide search without surveillance? That's one of the many questions answered in our 15 Years Without Tracking Celebration Blog Post! 🙌🥂🎈

If you have any questions, there are links to AMAs at the top 🤗 your questions and support are much appreciated.

18 March 2021 marks 15 years since we first publicly announced that we don't track the people using Mojeek 🙌🥂🎈🎉

Those retro colours are gone, that logo has morphed, but the policy still remains 😎

New #blog post: “A look at search engines with their own indexes”.

Most “alternative” search engines to the big three (Google, Bing, Yandex aka GBY) just source their results from GBY. I took a look at 30 search engines with their own crawlers/indexers to find actual alternatives.

I have unlimited respect for people who have the courage and energy to keep leading change, who work on things that are not mainstream.

Be it monitoring political figures, making sure a government respects the law, fighting for social rights, protecting employees from an employer, providing software or services that frees others... you are heroes and what you do matters.

Thank you for caring about others.

"[A] solid independent and private alternative to the big tech search engines ... it's probably the direct biggest rival to the Big Tech search engines that have their own crawlers." 🤭😊

Google has backed down massively. It is now signing deals with Australian news media to pay for their content. The Australian government, by refusing to give in to threats by Google, has created a worldwide precedent.

Before you can do bad things to people with a clear conscience, you must dehumanise them. In Big Tech designers and developers can build systems that track, profile, and exploit people then go home to hug their kids because they’re not people to them, they’re “users” and “data.”

We have this interesting feature proposal for /e/OS: a second "panic" PIN code that can fully erase the device in case of emergency. It's been rejected by Google for Android.

Do you think we should implement it?
