I don't understand why today everything has to be smart and connected? Smart termometr, kettle, rice cooker, garage doors, pet tracker...
@bdunbar you're theory sounds good, but do we really need an smart thermometer that log measures in app?
@MoriaCat I don't need one. But . need is subjective.
I don't need five handguns in as many calibers. But I'm glad I have the ability to own them.
Same, I guess with internet-enabled thermometers.
@MoriaCat Well what, am I supposed to turn on my own kettle now? What is this, the dark ages?
@jsrn good point
@MoriaCat Agreed, too much. And so much of it is insecure and/or current for about a year before the app or service is useless.
@MoriaCat agreed. I don't mind a dumb thermostat. why people gotta discriminate?
@MoriaCat For me is fun open/close things from my phone
@carlosjs23 I know it's fun and nice to have all in one device you carry all day. But some things with "smart" part are just plain dumb. Like this one: https://www.amazon.com/AIMOX-Stainless-Smartphone-Temperature-Teakettles/dp/B01EJGOGT6
@MoriaCat a fellow internetofshit follower? Haha the garage door thing though.
@frankiesaxx I do like idea of IoT, but making everything with it is kinda dumb for me security and usability wise
@MoriaCat
Because if they're not smart we feel dumb when we can't use them properly. Now we have an excuse.
@MoriaCat Capitalism, that's why. Have to keep producing and selling things to keep the economy moving. Also, it's not really a new thing. Remember in the 80s/90s when clocks and radios were being added to everything? I bet every device you own has a clock in it.
@MoriaCat Theory: marketing.
Widget A is 'internet connected. When you're comparing features, if 'A' has a thing and 'B' does not, 'A' looks better - it has more check-boxes.
It is relatively cheap and easy to jam 'internet' into anything these days, there isn't any reason for the makers of 'B' not to do so. Now they're competitive with 'A'.
It's a red queen's race.
