If I send 🙃 it means I have hit my limit, and I’m one minor inconvenience away from going apeshit

I doubt there is any technology that is as over-hyped and at the same time as hostile to accessibility and inclusiveness as virtual reality. Pretty much anyone with any sight problem that is not your standard short/far-sightedness is out: amblyopia, astigmatism, strabismus, hypertropia, etc. Also most problems with your inner ear will make you unable to use it. Then there is claustrophobia. Then there are all the people with non-standard head and body sizes.

Weird grammar gripe, journalism

“Alleged” or “allegedly” are misused so often in journalism and it’s making me grumpy

If a you hear a bunch of loud noises and someone says, “I think those were gunshots” that would be “a suspected shooting” NOT “an alleged shooting”

If you hear a bunch of loud noises and someone says, “there’s some guy shooting a gun over there” that’s “a shooting, and ‘some guy’ allegedly did it”

If that guy subsequently gets arrested then he is “the accused shooter.” If he is being charged with killing nine people then “the accused murderer is being charged with killing nine people” NOT “The accused murderer is being charged with allegedly killing nine people”

re: help sourcing a quote?

quote source to Kwame Ture:

“If a white man wants to lynch me, that's his problem. If he's got the power to lynch me, that's my problem. Racism is not a question of attitude; it's a question of power. Racism gets its power from capitalism. Thus, if you're anti-racist, whether you know it or not, you must be anti-capitalist. The power for racism, the power for sexism, comes from capitalism, not an attitude.”

They’re not “unhinged.”
They’re not “deranged.”
They’re not “sociopaths.”

They’re fascists.

Stop blaming disabled folks for the monsters planning to slaughter us.

Thinking about TERFism's long historical roots in classism. This is from an account of the women's movements in the 1850s US.

Someone I know has made a short film that's basically: sad lonely woman navigating personal loss and craving "freedom," but shot from male gaze.

It's all in b&w with the woman usually in something like an oversized white shirt with bare shoulders etc.

When will men get over this "aesthetic"? Why is this always the first thing amateur filmmakers (backed by proper financiers) make?

"I’m not anti-tech. But I worry greatly about the deployment of such power with so little thought given to, and so few boundaries against, its misuse, whether now or later. More care and public-minded oversight goes into someone’s plans for an addition to a house than to what can be or become a multi-billion dollar, multi-billion-user online platform. [...]

There are ways out of this. But it first requires abandoning the resignation that so many have come to about business as usual."

this thing happens to programmers eventually where their brain melts and they start writing their own text editor

It is obvious but apparently not obvious enough??? Can journalists stop jumping to wild conclusions??? NO

When a published report says, "This thing happened much less during x period to y period," it does not mean that the thing will never happen again, has stopped happening, or is not happening at this moment.

"It’s not hard to squint back in time and see why that decision was made. Until the internet came along, the vast majority of writing any of us encountered would have been formal writing: books, newspapers, magazines, and so on. Someone had to submit it, someone had to edit it, and someone had to publish it, and it made sense for something with that much effort poured into it to be rewarded with some level of permanence."

wait, 4 more months and this year ends? 😬

new project / personal news

New project: I'm rebranding myself and realigning what I *can* do with what I *want* to do.

Whenever I looked for jobs, I was always afraid of asserting myself, always open to doing anything I could. It gave me a range of experiences, but it never aligned with what I really wanted to do, or even how I did it.

But now, I think I may have the slight luxury of being the one who chooses.

I'm hoping, working on rebranding will help me stop second-guessing my skills. 🤞

I see a lot of open source software projects that do not do a good job of describing themselves.

It's okay. There's nothing shameful about that.

Most programmers aren't writers.

Just like most writers aren't programmers.

I can't code to save my life, but I can write some killer copy and content.

Know of any open source projects that need copy written?

I want to contribute.

Back to regular programming, no more daydreaming
