The Book of Kels @Nezchan

I've been active on Mastodon for about a week and a half now, and I'm STILL not fluent in French. What gives, huh?

@Nezchan I guess a week online won't be enough, need help ? :grin:

@AymDev I have been let down by the promises of this brave new world!

@Nezchan Practising and discussing (even just writing) are 2 good keys to learn a language !

@Nezchan you gotta get in that witch.club .. they got spells for that

@modernmodron Pity they've got the doors closed. I'll just have to stay here.

@Nezchan yeah it's open for 30 min at 8pm French time ... Very witchy :p

@modernmodron Well, I haven't really been actively a pagan for quite some time, so I'll leave the slots there open for people who'd benefit. I've staked out my little plot of land and planted my seeds, no point digging it all up again now.

@Nezchan oh yeah that's reasonable. Don't be like me and have 5 active accounts in different instances....

@modernmodron There's advantages to that, but in the end not really my style. Besides, mastodon.social is a pretty nice place to be.

@Nezchan It should work with a month of raw osmosis. That, or try what Bart did.

@Nezchan Meh. I took 11 years of french, and I still have a hard time understanding what some folks here are talking about. Gives me good practice, though. :)

@BrandonHill I really need to study more seriously, to be honest. I mean here I am, living literally an hour's bus ride from Quebec and looking at Federated toots straight from France. Plus a bunch of BD volumes sitting on the bookshelf right behind me that I'd love to read the dialogue in.

I really don't have much of an excuse.

@Nezchan There's always running it through Google Translate.

@BrandonHill Unacceptable!

For one thing it kinda sucks, but for another there's not much point if I don't read it for real.

@Nezchan I can usually fill in where GT flubs on the translation. I'm just rusty, since I haven't had to speak french in years. And yes, I know that since I live in Louisiana, that shouldn't make sense, but there's a big difference between Cajun french and standard Parisian french.

@BrandonHill I grew up in Nova Scotia, and while there's tones of Acadian French in the Province (which is where Cajun derives from), where I lived had none at all. I had terrible instruction in high school, and barely encountered the language "in the wild" until fairly recently when I came to Ontario. So I'm a /very/ late starter on this stuff.
