The Book of Kels @Nezchan

Why is Mastodon suddenly popping up a dialogue when you boost a post? It's not like you can't undo a boost if you do it by mistake, so it's a wasted step.

Unless, and I pray this isn't the case, they're planning on imitating Birbsite and introducing quote-boosts, which would be an AWFUL move.

@Nezchan you currently CAN'T undo a mistake boost, actually

@LogicalDash It's always been "hit the button a second time".

@Nezchan this never works for me? Are you certain

@Nezchan Part of the latest update Eugen spoke of earlier today. Not sure what the overall plan is for down the road, but I think you're right about it being wasted since you can undo it.

@Nezchan it actually is due to that process. That people do it by mistake. It's not because they are adding quotes, at least not yet, but I don't know how the development looks for that.
You haven't been able to info boosts on web, and a lot of other minor issues have cause a fair share of random boosts. It's basically just a band-aid.
We may be getting the option later to toggle that on account level.

@maloki I really pray they don't add quotes. They tend to make Birbsite an unreadable mess at times.

@Nezchan I'll add your thoughts to the dev group. But remember, anytime you discuss features and your thoughts about it you can tag it with so the devs can read up on your and other's thoughts

@maloki Ah, thanks. A lot of the time I forget tags exist, I should be a bit more aware of them.

@Nezchan No quote boosts. But confirm dialog was a requested feature.

@Gargron I see, that takes a load off my mind at least. Thanks for the clarification.

@Gargron @Nezchan Curious, why don't you like quote-boosts? I could see the issue with practicality—boosting a 500-word post and adding your own 500-word comment means one hell of a post—but generally, there are times when I want to add some context to what I'm quoting. Not just "this is awesome, you should know about it" but "here's why this specific thing meant something to me".

@csilverman I've answered it a couple of times, but simply put the example of Birbsite shows it tends towards overuse, and creates difficult-to-follow, often broken, conversation chains.

@gargron I know that some people requested confirm to boost—but why was this enabled by default for everybody? It seems like it should just be opt-in.

I've had to deal with multiple users who are confused about this and don't know they can turn it off.

@Nezchan Because some people we hitting the button accidentally

@shivian Have you looked at Birbsite, where you get strings of quote-tweets, some of which aren't visible, and can only be followed backwards?

@Nezchan so the implementation is poor, but that doesn't mean the feature (if done in a way that is useful) is "awful" does it?

@nezchan awww, I kind of miss quote-boosts. Why don’t you like them?

@aldersprig Because they largely make a mess of threading. Birbsite is full of conversations that can only be read backwards because of it, sometimes with gaps because it's not very reliable and depends on both you and the other person not having blocked someone involved.

@Nezchan Could mastodon.social vs. octodon.social run diff builds? Or local admin config stuff?

@jax No clue, you'd have to ask them about it.

@Nezchan @CobaltVelvet any thoughts on this boosting modal thing?

@jax @Nezchan We're still on v1.1.1 here and I heard there was bugs introduced later so I'm just waiting. Will updated in a few days at most.

@Nezchan I normally just do regular RTs, or quote with a simple "thread" when it is a multi part tweet. But I am curious... what's wrong with quote-boost?

@fabricio Check my timeline, I've explained my position better there.

@Nezchan I think that's new, not even in 1.1.1. Check your settings, you should be able to turn it off.
