The Book of Kels @Nezchan

Good morning Mastodon.

It's weird to have social media where I can just log on and say hi, rather than "what terrible thing are we talking about today?"

@Nezchan hi there, here it's already the afternoon :) (france !)

@Nezchan Good morning. Go slow. Ease into it. Enjoy it. :coffee:

@Nezchan we can talk about terrible things if it'd help you feel more at home?

@Nezchan Kind of scary, in a good way of course. Hi!

@Wayves In a way I feel less informed. In another way, I feel happier. It's complicated.

@Nezchan Good morning! I hope none of us we'll have to talk about anything awful today ^^.

@Sylvhem It's not necessarily a bad thing to keep up on the current events, but it does wear you down a bit.

@Nezchan @Sylvhem i used to think one could keep up with current events - now i realize thats impossible, the news is rebranded every day . its all ghosts and mirrors !! best to just focus on the things one can personally influence in a positive way

@theresatagonmyshirt In my case it's less a matter of keeping up as having a general sense of how things are moving.

@Nezchan That's so true. Sometime I just don't want to read about them *right now*.

@Nezchan Morning! Well, mid-afternoon here. And it is nice, isn't it?

@Nezchan After everyone stops talking about Mastodon and snickering about "toots", we'll revisit the terrible things :/

Not trying to be cynical—and I don't even think highlighting terrible things is wrong. Crazy, maybe, but I think the internet is one of the most powerful forces for good that ever existed.

I'll admit I don't miss Facebook bumper-sticker info, though—memes about Trump, lists of stats from lord knows where, all-caps rants in Impact. Discuss terrible things, but be intelligent.

@csilverman Well, even if people talk about terrible things, it's easier to avoid here by the very nature of the site. Most of the politics stuff gets put behind CWs by convention so it's not quite so in-your-face here.

Plus, the "artists' colony" vibe is pretty strong, even with the recent influx of people, who largely seem happy to join in rather than change it. So I don't expect too much change.

Also Toots are cute! mastodon.social/media/4vtH8It_

@Nezchan artists' colony is an interesting way of putting it. You may be right.

That analogy also makes me think that—at the risk of sounding elitist—social media's worst habits come from *everyone* being on there. Something like Mastodon might stay cool longer because, similar to a colony, it's self-selecting—only the weirdos know about it, and normal people won't come here :P

@csilverman Even if they do come here, there's already a pre-existing culture that's actually reinforced by the federated nature of the system. Like a network of little towns and villages and hamlets, but no actual cities at this point.

@Nezchan you mean, sort of diversity by design, rather than the kind of monoculture that gives rise to the behaviors I was talking about?

@csilverman Yes, although in part as an emergent property rather than deliberate design.

@Nezchan right? This place is already less stressful

@Nezchan same. People seem to be here for community, not another news feed, and it's delightful.

@phildini That plays into my interests well, since I want people to read and enjoy my stories.

@Nezchan Hi! Have a great day!

I agree with you, here things are more light-spirited.
