I think my big gardening problem is if I don't do tomatoes, what I could grow instead that I'd actually use.
Zucchini is out, we get cucumber beetles so I want to avoid those for now, I tried peppers a couple of times but they never really took off. So idk.
@Nezchan Huge melons everywhere!
@Nezchan you mention things to eat but do you also grow herbs ? it's really great to improve what you cook : parsley, thyme, coriander… even mint to put with green-tea !
@Sasha I regularly grow mint, oregano, thyme, basil, rosemary, sage and chives, all in containers.
@Nezchan How about growing salad then ? Or radishes ? They don't take that much surface.
@Sasha We were growing lettuce in a container last year, might be interesting to try growing it in one of the beds instead.
@Nezchan Kohlrabi are delicious and just weird enough to get you gardening nerd cred in some circles.
@Nezchan How about basil? leek? bell peppers ?
@Moke Tried peppers a couple of times, they just don't really take off. Probably the climate. And already doing basil.
Leek is interesting though.
@Nezchan Strawberries grow inside well. Also bucket style.
@Nezchan beans!
@jec I'm growing scarlet runners already, and Roomie doesn't care for beans so I'd have no use for them in cooking.
@Nezchan tater!
@jec What's taters, Precious?
@Nezchan potato 🥔
Also: beets carrots 🥕 turnips spinach all good stuff
@jec Loads of carrots already since they're Roomie's favourite. She goes whole hog on those.
@Nezchan There are some beautiful and colorful types of cauliflower that are fun. Bright yellow and purple ones.
@Nezchan herbs? Rosemary is very easy to grow.
@Kirbstr Already growing a variety of herbs in half-barrels, so that's covered.
@Nezchan basil, if you can! To be eaten with your tomatoes. Thyme is also really easy, and useful
@Nezchan i like radishes..
@Nezchan I really like peas and snow peas, just because they're such a huge improvement on the store bought versions. Also, I find they grow...exuberantly. The first time I grew them they pulled the trellis down. Maybe Eggplants? That's another one where you can grow something completely unlike what you get in the supermarket.
@Nezchan radishes are satisfying easy and pest resistant :) also snow peas/broad beans are super vigorous in the cooler months. In warmer months, eggplant is quite pest resistant too (maybe a bit but too vigorous with fruiting to be a big problem)
Maybe a dwarf variety of melon that doesn't spread too much?
