I guess people berating mobile games as "not real games" isn't a thing people do on Mastodon.
Is...is this heaven?
@Caelyn I think grit is involved, and a lot of the colour brown.
@Caelyn And about a thousand litres of dark red.
@Nezchan Not just dark red, but grimdark red.
@Caelyn The grimmest, darkest, red of them all. In amounts no body should normally contain.
@Nezchan I play Futurama: Game of Drones everyday for almost the past two years. I am on level 278.
@OldandConfused So Candy Crush but a licensed property? I dig it.
@Nezchan I loved it so much, I wrote an article about it. It's the best match game I've ever played... but I love the source material, so...
@Nezchan
All games are games. Judge each on quality and technical skill, accounting for limitations and purposes of the platform.
@TheDistinction @Nezchan I remember gaters trying to explain to me what constituted what a real game was...usually when bitching about Gone Home or something. How this became a thing of importance to them is a perplexing and pathetic mystery. Can I interact with it? Is it fun to me? It's a game!
@OldandConfused @Nezchan
Well I believe that 'walking simulators' like Gone Home etc are in the line between games and art. There are interactive art exhibits that are gamier games.
@TheDistinction @Nezchan I definitely view walking sims as games. Or as walking games. If people want games to be possibly viewed as art, saying a game is more like an artistic expression than a game seems counter productive to me. But I am not an intellectual. I play a lot of them and they usually amuse me, so they are games.
@TheDistinction @OldandConfused I see the gameplay element in games like Gone Home or Dear Esther isn't in the mechanics but in the player's head as they piece together the mystery of what's happening. Or in Gone Home's case the overall timeline of events to do with the uncle and your father.
@OldandConfused @TheDistinction Don't be silly, games aren't supposed to be FUN! They're supposed to be challenging and gritty and really brown and demons and swords and raaaaaaargh!!!
@Nezchan @OldandConfused
Ewww. Give me Duskers or Tricky Towers any day.
@TheDistinction @OldandConfused Don't get me wrong, I like /watching/ people play SoulsBorne games or similar. But I also like Love Live or Neko Atsume or Hero Seige or Night In the Woods or Oxenfree or...
@OldandConfused @TheDistinction Or even stuff that's more experience than game, like Viridi.
@TheDistinction Yeah, it's hard to take someone seriously when they say Candy Crush isn't a real game but Pac-Man is.
@Nezchan We know the only real games are those the gods play with the lives of men. And Doom.
