I slept very poorly last night due to the news that Musk gave privileged / possibly PII & DM level access of Twitter mod access to a variety of strident anti-LGBTQ (especially anti-trans) bigots who masquerade as journalists. This is an incident which would require user notification under California law, if it weren’t for the platform owner granting it. It still might be a violation of privacy laws. It’s absolutely a disaster for all LGBTQ people who used Twitter.

In short: presume that transphobes & homophobes in the employ of theofascists with ties to foreign governments can read your Twitter DMs & aren’t bound by any NDA, & will use that information however they please.

Ms. Penny Oaken

I am in tears because now I’m having to delete conversations I’ve had with dead friends

@PennyOaken there's an option to download your data in the settings. When I did that with FB, it downloaded those conversations as well. Maybe do that before deleting everything?

@CordiallyChloe Thank you thank you thank you! I downloaded my data in April. My convos are in a zip file backed up to long term storage only I and my family have access to. You just set my heart at ease ❤️

@PennyOaken Glad I could ease your worries! I'd double check those files to be sure, since I haven't done it for Twitter. But it's a(n) (educated) guess.

@CordiallyChloe @PennyOaken Thank you so much for your help! 🥰🥰🥰🥰 My heart broke into so many little pieces when I read that Penny was distraught and crying 😞😞😞😞

@PennyOaken @CordiallyChloe make sure you convert the links to not t.co ones, the data dump only has t.co links

@PennyOaken Deleting won't help. They don't actually get deleted.

@glowrocks at a db level, for sure; I don’t know exactly how much access Weiss & Co have, so if it has a chance of frustrating them or protecting people, I have to try

@PennyOaken Can't argue with that. But, at a db level, elmo has full access, so there is still a big concern what he will do (allow to be done) w/that data.

Hopefully European regulators will step in along w/US FTC.

@glowrocks @PennyOaken data they keep for archival has an expiration date most likely, DMs you keep in your profile certainly don't

@PennyOaken the painful part about that is not just how it feels but also the realization that deleting DMs in the client doesn't in the slightest way guarantee that they're deleted from the back end. 😔

(Although, if you are in Germany, privacy laws there might give you a slight leg up?)

@deviantollam @PennyOaken that unfortunately assumes Twitter is still bothering to actually follow those laws - the more “screw ups” there are from Elon and Twitter, the less convinced I am that any of it is accidental.

@PennyOaken the twutter archive download should also have your dms, you can still have a trace of them
