To backtrack a bit, I have been following one of these seals since she was a puppy herself, in 2014. She was a beautiful and curious pup but I was always concerned for her because in addition to her leucism she was also smaller than most...
...and her light colouring would have made her more visible to great whites and orcas. But she seemed to figure this out, as she has spent her life so far as a littoral seal, never venturing far from the place where she was born and grew up.
I was very pleased to learn this spring that little pale seal has not only had a good winter's feed and appears to be very well, but has mastered the 🇳🇿 fur seal nana hobby of deep crashing.
She also has some friends who snooze a bit closer to the surf, actually a lot closer, not that this is a 💤💤💤 disncentive...
These beach nap reprieves serve a social as well as biological purpose for the female seals, as they are able to absorb the nutrients from their hunting themselves before going back to the rookery to nurse the summer pups, and also to get away from the males for a while. But...
...some male seals are a bit different and just "feel like" they should be able to partake of the female beach sanctuaries. This is not a problem because of course they are indistinguishable in size, smell, and behaviour and blend in well.

However this day ended happily with all mammals in harmony. I always like to add that I strongly discourage people from bothering or approaching wildlife. However in this very isolated area seals and humans are used to seeing one another and these encounters are pretty normal. ☮️
