@skirts Yet here we are, in a space without advertising, or where the closest it gets are folks pimping their patreons or artworks. The fediverse is big now, but still seems to have successfully resisted colonization by capitalistic stuff. So I think there's some hope for the future of systems which are large yet not commercial in a web 2.0 way.
