Hi, I don't think they use a blochain, they just use a distributed hash table (dht). The holochain project is not a cryptocyrrency project by itself, although there is one implementation for holo fuel for cloud hosting. The idea is to allow developers to make their own holochain to decentralize their application and does not limit them to need to have an inbuilt currency.
