Forgot to plug the new episode of my podcast on Monday. In this one, we discuss the post-apocalyptic novel A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter Miller Jr.

Agent Tom Shade, an Apex Society character who hasn't shown up since way back in Issue #2, will be making another appearance fairly soon. I imagined the character as a Dick Tracy-type, with a little bit of Will Eisner's The Spirit - though grouchier than either. For this design update, I based some of his facial features on actor Michael Shannon, who I imagine him sounding like as well.

Boseman brought a power and dignity to the role and held his own onscreen against flashier characters like Killmonger and Suri. I thought he still had his best performances ahead of him, and the sudden news of his death was a punch in the gut. Rest in Power.

Thought it would be necessary to acknowledge the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman here, considering the subject matter of this story. I've been drawing on a number of older sources for the setting, particularly Pauline Hopkins' Of One Blood, but it's obvious that Black Panther's Wakanda was also a giant influence. A non-colonized Pan-African Utopia is a very powerful concept and you can already see its effect on young black people as a source of inspiration.

Just finished reading the original Phantom of the Opera novel. I'll probably use Erik in Apex Society at some point, so I thought I'd sketch out a look for his face and anatomy as described in the book.

Northwest Smith was of course a precursor to Han Solo and similar characters that would come later, so my design for this guy is based on a young Harrison Ford (but thinner and more scarred and weathered from hard living).
