While Mastodon is slow for me as a user, the bigger question in my mind is how can we build efficient implementations such that the cost of federation (read: digital freedom) energy consumption wise isn't sadness inducing.

@arianvp and Haskell, and Rust, and ... Yes! They all have different strengths and there should be enough choice for different operators to choose from efficient (in different ways) implementations. One might be better for large user bases, another for medium sized communities that interact more frequently and have richer follows, filters, etc.
