There are two really worrying trends right now in regards to internet accessibility. Web page bloat and the sneaking acceptability of horrible ISP practices with mobile providers. They both stem from the assumption that everyone has access to some form of broadband internet at home. The reality is that for a huge portion the world, the only portal they have to this space is a cheap smartphone. They are not really luxuries but the most economic form of internet access available.
"So i just came out to my dad abt being #nb, and he said something really wise about names, i think.
He said “Gifts are not obligations. You give things to people, and you hope they like them. And your name was a gift from us to you. If it doesn’t work for you anymore, you’re not obligated to keep it.”
and i just thought maybe other people could use hearing something like that."
It's okay to unfollow people, for the same reason it's okay to mute or block them. You don't owe anyone your time or energy. Take care of yourself.
“Be kind to each other.” The stewardess was giving us thanks on the mic for traveling in cramped seats on the airline, in a robotic voice. I had tuned her out. Then, her voice changed. She went off script. “Be kind to each other.” I looked up, met her eyes, nodded. Not sure if she saw me. Probably not. But with those few words, I paid attention to the people around me. We helped each other with bags. I wished her Good Night as we departed. “Be kind to each other.” Yes. Please. #smallstories
Unpopular opinion: the fact that Mastodon needs some explaining for new users to understand it is actually great and should not be "fixed".
It's a free and easy subject to engage a conversation between strangers, and a good way to demonstrate Mastodon greatest power: shout into the void asking for help, there's a good chance someone will actually answer.
When I moved from higher ed to public transit, someone on higher ed said to me: “Transit workers, what do they have to learn?” A couple of weeks in and I see us training everything from janitor safety to train repair, none of which is taught in any school anywhere.
The perceived gap between “education” and “training” worries me. As I walk shop floors & above tracks, I am painfully aware of my “educated ignorance.”
I've been thinking about what to call my current feeling. Totally tired (exhausted) while down deep happy.
Tappy? Tirappy? Exhauspy?
Hey new peeps! Tomorrow is #ff Follow Friday, pretty similar to other places, where you shoot out cool people who are worth paying attention to!
Please make sure they're okay with it first. Some folks (like me) kinda keep to themselves and random follows out of nowhere can cause stress and anxiety.
So very tired... Need to stay up until 8:15pm to not pick up my daughter (who stayed home due to a minor injury) but still meet a new family for carpooling. I just wanna sleep...
Thought on Mastodon v. big 2 social media: birb & facey have conditioned us to "want" certain things out of "social media" and a lot of that is:
🔹 constant stream of content
Basically, it's evolved into more a marketing media than the social media in began as:
🔸 a place to feel comfortable
🔸 share interests
🔸 have conversations
🔸 have income-independent fun.
I don't know if mastodon will get me back to that, but I hope so, and I want to be open to it.
Question: Using https://mastodon.social/api/v1/timelines/tag/smallstories I can only see the last 20 toots using the hashtag.
What is the easiest way to see more than 20?
#Mastodon vetrans, it is your responsibility to take these newcomers and teach them the sacred ways of the herd.
They must know of the 🅱️ , and the oats, and the yams, and how to spell gameing. The awoos and the toots and the rotating coyotes, eternally spinning. Someone must teach them of Gargamel and what we do in this house. They must be introduced to the witches and the commies and the furries and the trans folks.
Let the people share our rich heritage!
Please direct your friends to joinmastodon.org or another instance of your choice like octodon.social, toot.cat or toot.cafe, etc. mastodon.social is "default" choice for a lot of people and it's getting kinda hammered right now.
Interesting. It's a holiday and fairly quiet in my real life, but Mastodon is *really* busy. Welcome to new folks, I hope you take some time to explore and get to know the place.
hello new people! best tip i can give for mastodon is to follow and interact without fear. poke around the #introductions tag to find people with similar interests and go for it (also write up an intro so others can find and follow you!)
i'm a #librarian, love #gaming (and/or #gameing), have a floofcat that I don't post often enough, have chronic invisible illnesses, am firmly in the swing of #knitting season (check out #MastoKAL2017 if you also knit!) and read mostly #scifi and #fantasy
The "rules" boil down to being supportive and helpful and creative, and as odd as you need to be.
Kindly post anything you worry might disturb using the CW (content warning) option or intentionally deliver it only to a restricted audience. But don't target anyone with venomous posts. That will get you tossed out.
Have fun, just not at someone else's expense, please.
