I stopped walking when I spotted the cardboard box by the alley.
'Free to a Good Home' was written in cursive on the side.
Five cream and ginger kittens were huddled within.
I couldn't leave it be. I'd have to get them to the no-kill shelter the next town over tomorrow but I wasn't going to just leave them out here overnight.
As I hefted the box, each kitten opened all 3 of their dark eyes. In my head I heard, "Thank you."
