I was inside a chain bookstore for a meeting. A little early, I wandered the stacks. A little girl darted past me, heading towards the music section semi-isolated from the rest of the store. Her mother soon came after her. “I wanna see music,” the girl cried, to which the mother replied, “These are records. We don’t even have a CD player at home. Come back to the books.” The little girl looked back over her shoulder at the music area as her mother led her away by hand. #smallstories

During the first Gilded Age, the super-rich had opulent private railway cars, in which, appended to passenger trains, they travelled. In the US, you can still hire them and attach them to Amtrak trains.

I wake, amazed again at how the world can be covered in ice and still be so beautiful. The following day's snow turned to rain, and the rain, to ice, with dropping temperatures overnight. I notice the trees in our front yard, limbs coated in sheathes of translucence that sparkle in the emerging morning sun. I'm tempted to hold a branch, to give it warmth, to help the tree emerge from the cold. Instead, I cheer on the sun, and pray the trees knew enough to sleep the night away. #smallstories
