More questions for Mastodon! Especially the mastodon.art crowd.
What do you do to shake up your creativity when you're in a rut?
@jankoekepan always a good way to shake things up!
Another big thing is to go away from the art, and learn something else. How do you birth a lamb? How do you dig a posthole? How do you use a scythe?
How does compositing work?
It expands the brain.
@TheDaughterOfTyr yes, doing something different can help, going away for a day, getting out to see friends, or trying a completely different art form for a bit. When I'm stuck I go and play guitar or take some photos or sew or sculpt (though i do need to get my ADHD under control a bit!!). The Artists Way says you should take your inner artist on regular nourishing 'dates' too... Whatever counts as input for you, galleries or nature walks or shows
@Damage been meaning to check out some local art shows actually. 💜
@TheDaughterOfTyr i see the ways in which I've been creative thus far as huge strokes of luck, so it's not for everyone: I am thankful, I feel lucky to have been as creative as I have so far, make honest peace with that being enough, and go back to my regular job stuff. if there's more, it'll come. so far there always is. there's no sense worrying and feeling negative about this in particular.
@TheDaughterOfTyr I have a variety of projects of different types I rotate between, and I give a day or two of time between switching projects to let my mind veg out on pokemon or youtube channels. Also, reading is restorative.
A long hike in nature, possibly a day off.
Doodle in a non-native medium (as a musician I draw) possibly as tactile as possible.
Reading a book - either a good fiction or an expert thing about your medium (artists' biographies for example) .
Log off for a day from all screens.
Catch-up with a good friend.
A date, love-making, sex. :)
@TheDaughterOfTyr There are many things, but I think it's the most important to frame it first.
I call it creative ineptitude, and is a result of your eyes catching up to your practical skill. Think music when you are able to hear what you a doing wrong when you play. I believe one should be happy for it happening as if you see what is wrong you have something is wrong, it's worse doing something and not seeing the mistakes. So pop a champaign because YOU are improving!😄
@TheDaughterOfTyr I make up a little challenge to do an idea I have inside a specific bunch of rules I make up, like less than 5 colors, must be rectangular, and feel like it was printed on paper, or "drawing from the style of a dead famous painter". or technique challenges like, I challenge myself to not rely on planning but feel it out as I begin. these are kinda fun for me idk
@TheDaughterOfTyr a good one to get unstuck is to draw whatever is in front of you, like a coffee cup, a cat, a house plant. I also like to get junk mail and just scribble circles and doodle on it until my mind unsticks
@oceana1009 this really appeals to me. Great idea.
@TheDaughterOfTyr
I try a different genre or different technique.
Sometimes, different equipment.
