When it comes to what is, or isn't, a sandwich, I base it largely on structure. Namely, a sandwich has this basic structure: A filling with bread on top and bread underneath.

Immediately, this disqualifies open-faced "sandwiches" as actual sandwiches.

Now, there's a bit more to it than that. The bread need not consist of distinct pieces in order for it to be a sandwich. The bread can be joined, as long as it is open at at least one end.
